Popping in today to share new New Zealand brand ODDTHING with you. Behind the name is young talent Henry Caird. An experienced Industrial Designer, Henry is called on by companies to conceptualise, 3d-visualise and detail-design their new products. Now he’s launching his own – with the mission that every ODDTHING be thoughtful, good-looking, long-lasting and nice to use.
First up was the Long Light, a suspension lighting solution for hanging over different sized tables and countertops. It’s scalable by design, so you can choose the length that fits your space, up to a super-statement three metres wide. Light shines through the gaps where each module meets, and the colours are also customisable. I’d love to see this in white.
ODDTHING’s sophomore product was one of those simple-but-genius ideas born out of personal need. Henry (and his mate James Wotton, fellow creative and coffeephile) had joined the growing number of people making filtered coffee at home, but had nowhere to store their paper filters. The Paper Filter Station is available in black or white, and stores Chemex, Moccamaster or V60 coffee filters. There’s also a special Kokako Coffee version, and Henry and James have new colours planned for this year.
As ODDTHING grows, Henry is keen to introduce other designers and makers who share his passion for minimalist objects with a touch of character. Keep an eye out for an upcoming collab with a talented American designer, a new lighting product, and more homeware and lifestyle products to come.
