Chic Centrefold

Photography by Michelle Weir for Rowson Kitchens

New Zealand designer Annika Rowson has just unveiled this elegant beauty – a third kitchen in her Rowson Kitchens showroom. Having a showroom that changes every couple of years enables Annika not only to showcase leading edge materials, concepts and functional features in kitchen design, but also to personally challenge herself to apply materials in new and unexpected ways.

Which is exactly what she’s done here with the centrepiece of this kitchen – that Corian kitchen island (in Cirrus White, if you’re taking notes). Annika chose to actually use the reverse side of the Corian to enhance its patterning, and then had it hand-fluted (which enhances the reverse-side patterning even more). The island also features a Corian Duo 023 bowl which is seamless into the top, and there are hot points and a full Fisher & Paykel integrated dishwasher on the inside curve of the island.

Perhaps my favourite aspect of the space is Annika’s tightrope-wire-balancing-act of depth and weight with light and softness – at one end of the scale you have the heft of the marble concrete floor, rich smoked oak cabinetry, bronze hardware, bronze glass… on the other you have the sheer floaty curtains, the almost-floating sculptural lighting, the creamy-clad upper walls and extra-high stud…

That Corian kitchen island in itself is a beautiful balancing act – weighty but white; curvy rounded edges juxtaposed with the linear fluting; the silky-smooth top alongside all the tactility and texture of the grooves and ridges.

In the right hand corner there, there’s a separate small black sink, with a matte black Zenith Hydro Tap (the taps that produce boiling water immediately) with a hidden Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer next to it. The drawer hardware is Blum Tip-On – press a drawer to open it, give it a small push and the drawer soft-closes by itself.

The elegant cabinetry is a rich Smoked Oak veneer by Plymasters, and it houses a tall pantry (with 5 internal drawers that open individually) and integrated column fridge and column freezer by Fisher & Paykel. Hands up who’d watch a video walk-through of this space *puts both hands up*  The tall cabinet pull bars (called ‘closet bars’, if you’re searching for them) and smaller furniture knobs, all in smoked bronze – yum, are by Buster & Punch.

This gallery-esque display unit features backlit lighting by Hafele and – perhaps my favourite touch – bronze glass.

I spy with my little eye – the Smoked Oak rangehood unit is actually curved to match the radius of the island

The benchtop above is Dekton in (black, textured) Sirius, and Annika chose travertine finger tiles by Tile Depot to mirror the vertical lines in the island and upper wall.

Those lights are bubble pendants by Mr Ralph, and the island tap is a Plumbline Buddy in a brushed nickel finish.
